Oxymorons – Words that disagree but still make sense
The other day me and my friend were trying to find the way to a mall using Google maps. As usual, the route shown was the shortest, so we decided to take it. Halfway down, my friend was exasperated riding through all the inside lanes and commented “Are we going in the right direction? This map is clearly confusing!”
Something stopped me there. She had just used an oxymoron—and right in that moment, I realized how common they were, quietly hiding in everyday conversations!
I am in awe of Oxymorons. These contradictory word pairings are a fascinating figure of speech. By combining two opposite words, they create new meanings.
We probably have heard or used them before: “bittersweet”, “deafening silence”, “seriously funny”.
At first, they sound like mistakes. How can silence be deafening? Or something be both bitter and sweet? And someone be serious and funny? But therein lies the charm of these quirky words; oxymorons capture feelings and situations that regular words fail to express.
Oxymorons pop-up everywhere—from poetry to movies to everyday conversations. A teacher can hand out an “original copy”, someone may be told to “act naturally” when they under pressure to perform, and a secret everyone knows becomes an “open secret.”
What makes them endearing and funny is that they reflect real life, which is full of contradictions. We may feel happiness laced with sadness, clarity mixed with confusion, or moments that are, quite literally, bittersweet. These thoughtful twists highlight irony, humor, or truth in life’s situations.
So, the next time someone says: “It’s the only choice available,” or “There was a small crowd,” just smile. You’ve just caught another clever oxymoron in action.
